Is sugar bad?
Is sugar bad?
The short answer: Yes.
The long answer: It depends.
The truth is there’s bad sugar and good sugar.
It may not surprise you to hear that a banana is better for you than a donut.
Yes, both are sugary.
But 1 is natural sugar & the other is processed sugar.
Let’s take a quick look at both…
First up — natural sugar.
You can find this type of sugar in fruits, veggies, beans, grains… and even dairy products.
Now yes, natural sugar is an awesome energy source. But what makes it so much better than that processed junk is all the other stuff that comes with it. I’m talking about vitamins, minerals, and fiber — which slows down the absorption of sugar. Meaning you’re less likely to get that “sugar slump.”
You see, that’s the problem with processed sugar — all you get… is sugar. You don’t get vitamins with a donut. Or vital minerals with a candy bar. You just get pure energy that your body takes in and then burns up — very fast. Hence that sugar crash.
It’s like pushing the pedal to the metal in your car… and then wondering why the engine needs a break to cool off.
Same goes for your body and processed sugar.
But like they say… ”even moderation in moderation.”
Having a cupcake every now and then isn’t going to kill you. But when you start consuming a “treat” like that everyday… you’re asking for a list of health issues like:
- Cavities
- Damaged gums
- Pressure on liver
- Sped up aging process
- Heart disease
- Type 2 diabetes
- And cancer risk
So with that said…. Here is my advice: avoid processed sugar. (But if you enjoy a candy bar here and there… don’t beat yourself up.) However, the next time you need your sugar “fix” grab something healthier like a banana or an apple. Or even a glass of whole milk. You’ll get the energy you need & so much more.
Plus, your body will thank you.
